Austrian Davis Cup statistics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article gives the detailed results of the Austrian Davis Cup team since the beginning of the competition.

Austria took an active part in the Davis Cup for the first time in 1905. With several interruptions (the last of which in 1947), 78 editions with Austrian participation have so far been held. The most successful appearance was in 1990, when the team, consisting of Thomas Muster , Alexander Antonitsch and Horst Skoff , reached the semifinals. There, Horst Skoff failed in the decisive fifth game after as many sets against the American Michael Chang .

In 1988 the Austrian Davis Cup team was promoted to the world group for the first time since the introduction of the continental groups and has been playing alternately in this (17 seasons so far) and Europe / Africa group I since 1989. The longest phase in the world group without interruption lasted from 2004 until 2009 - six seasons in which Jürgen Melzer was regularly used at least two times; During this time, every first round was followed by a win in the playoff to stay in the world group. The last ascent into the world group came in 2010 in front of an outside audience against Israel for a stay of 3 years (2011 to 2013), in 2012 there was a first round win against Russia, the first since 1995 against Spain. In 2014 the team was able to avoid relegation from Europe / Africa Group I with a win against Latvia.
