Ladislav "Laci" Legenstein (born November 19, 1926 in Čakovec , Kingdom of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs , today Croatia ) is a former Yugoslav and Austrian tennis player . In his youth in Čakovec he was a versatile athlete who also played table tennis , volleyball and football . He later focused on tennis, winning two tournaments in singles in his career.

career

He was born as the son of Geza Legenstein and his wife Elizabeta, geb. Kemeny was born in Čakovec. His parents came from families with Hungarian - Jewish roots. Both became successful table tennis players . In the 1920s they founded a table tennis and tennis section at the local sports club in Čakovec. Ladislav, known as Laci, played several sports as a boy and a member of the sports club, but later, as a student in Zagreb , he only played tennis intensively.

In the 1950s he was one of the best tennis players in the former Yugoslavia; In 1954 he was fourth in the rankings . In 1955 he moved to Germany , first to Freiburg and later to Heidelberg . In 1960 he received Austrian citizenship and played for the Austrian Davis Cup team from 1960 to 1962 .

In his career Legenstein won several tournaments in a double and two singles, first in Hilversum (1957), where he in the final Fred Dehnert from the Netherlands struck, and then at the Rogers Cup in Toronto (1960), where he Warren Woodcock from Australia defeated .

In 1959 he made it to the round of 16 of the French Open in Paris . In the other Grand Slam tournaments he reached at most the first round at Wimbledon Championships and round two at the US Open in Forest Hills .

In doubles he made it to the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 1959 and in mixed doubles only the second round, also from Wimbledon (1961).

From the mid-1960s he was a tennis trainer at the Heidelberg TC .

As a senior, he played in the appropriate age categories until 2010 and won several tournaments. Together with Oskar Jirkovsky (* 1924), he became team world champion in the age group 80+ in 2006.
