Federico Luzzi (born January 3, 1980 in Arezzo , † October 25, 2008 there ) was an Italian tennis player . In February 2008 he was banned for illegal betting and possible result agreements.

Career

Luzzi, the son of a doctor, was one of the world's best players as a U14 world champion and U16 European champion. In 1999 he became a professional tennis player. He finished the 2001 season in 96th place in the world rankings after reaching the quarter-finals in Barcelona and the third round in Rome , as well as winning two Challenger tournaments . That same year he also made his Davis Cup debut for Italy. Luzzi moved up to 92nd place in early 2002, but then suffered a shoulder injury that set him back in terms of sport.

In 2007, Luzzi had the first problems with those responsible for the ATP after he wore a T-shirt with a Playboy Bunny motif during qualification for the US Open 2007 . He was not allowed to wear the t-shirt for his game in the main field. In February 2008 the ATP found him guilty of illegal betting and result agreements and banned him for 200 days. A US $ 50,000 fine was also imposed.

He played his last game on the ATP Challenger Series at the end of September 2008 in Naples . On October 19, 2008, he had to give up a game of the Italian team championship because of a strong fever. In the hospital he was finally diagnosed with acute leukemia , to which he succumbed just six days later.
