Kooyong Classic (also named Priceline Pharmacy Classic after the main sponsor ) is an international invitation tournament in men's and women's tennis that is held in the Melbourne district of Kooyong . It takes place annually in January at the Kooyong Stadium of the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club , shortly before the Australian Open . It was created after the Australian Open in 1988 moved from Kooyong to the newly built Melbourne Park . While it was played on grass in the first few years , it has been played on hard courts (currently Plexicushion ) since 1995 . After an edition in 1993, women have been taking part in the tournament at the Kooyong Classic again since 2017 .
The tournament is not part of the ATP World Tour (men) and WTA Tour (women), which means that the players do not win any points for the tennis world rankings . Nevertheless, it is often used by top players to prepare for the Australian Open. It will not be played in the knockout system . Instead, each participant plays three matches in a preliminary round, before the winner, second and third place finishers are determined in the final round.
In 1990 the tournament bore its first sponsor name. Until 1992 the event was organized by the insurance company Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society Ltd. known as the Colonial Mutual Classic . From 1993 to 2001 it was only called Colonial Classic . It followed from 2002 to 2004 the Commonwealth Bank with the Commonwealth Bank International . After a year under the old name Kooyong Classic , the namesake from 2006 to 2014 was AAMI (Australian Associated Motor Insurers Ltd.), an Australian motor insurer that belongs to the Suncorp-Metway Group. Since 2015, the event has borne the name of the drugstore retail company Priceline , which is part of Australian Pharmaceutical Industries (API).
