Gerald Melzer (born July 13, 1990 in Vienna ) is an Austrian tennis player .

biography

Gerald Melzer's father, Kommerzialrat Rudolf Melzer ( SPÖ ), was mayor of Deutsch-Wagram from 1998 to 2001 ; his mother Michaela Melzer is an employee. His older brother Jürgen Melzer is one of the most successful Austrian tennis players.

Career

2008 to 2010

Melzer's greatest success in 2008 was surviving the qualification and reaching the 2nd round of the ATP Challenger tournament in Graz . He also won the double title at the same tournament together with his brother Jürgen.

In July 2010 Gerald Melzer survived the qualification of the ATP tournament in Umag and was thus in the main competition of an ATP World Tour tournament for the first time . There he failed already in the first round against the Czech Jan Hájek with 4: 6, 3: 6. In September of the same year he won his first three futures tournaments in Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda.

Since 2011

After a mediocre start to the season with some first and second round defeats, Melzer won his fourth future in the United States in May 2011 and moved into the finals of the doubles competition at the same tournament. In November Melzer successfully defended his title in the futures in Burundi and Rwanda. In October Melzer took part for the second time in the main competition of the ATP double tournament in Vienna , but failed, as in the previous year, in the first round.

Melzer won further futures in 2012 as well as his second tournament in the Challenger category.

In April 2013 Melzer survived the qualification in Houston and was in the main draw of an ATP tournament for the second time in his career. However, he clearly failed in the first round with 6: 2 and 6: 2 against the Italian Paolo Lorenzi .

In 2014 he made his debut for the Austrian Davis Cup team in Europe-Africa Zone I against Slovakia. However, in the last game, which was of no importance for Slovakia when the score was 3: 1.

2015 he won the Davis Cup in early March in the Euro-African Zone I against Sweden in the last match of the decisive third point for Austria after his Davis Cup experienced brother and Jürgen both their opening single, the double at the side of Alexander Peya lost had, but Andreas Haider-Maurer had won his two singles.
