Nikolai Dawydenko defended his title in singles , but was eliminated in the first round. In this year's final, Marin Čilić met local hero Philipp Kohlschreiber . Kohlschreiber was able to prevail in two sets and thus triumphed for the second time after 2007 in Munich. This was the fourth single ATP title in his career, and the third on German soil. Čilić, on the other hand, lost the final in Munich for the second time after 2010. The biggest surprise of the tournament was Tommy Haas , who started with a wildcard , defeated the top seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and reached an ATP semi-final for the first time since July 2009.
In doubles, Simone Bolelli and Horacio Zeballos won the title last year, but they did not take part in the tournament this year. In this year's final, the top seeded František Čermák and Filip Polášek won in two sets against Xavier Malisse and Dick Norman . That was almost a year after their first, meanwhile fourth joint ATP title. For Čermák it was the 27th ATP title of his career, for Polášek the ninth.
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 28 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The four top seeded players in the singles each got a bye into the second round.
The qualification took place from April 28-30, 2012. Four qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
