Functionary and selection trainer

Petrů began as a sports journalist, from 1921 he also worked as a functionary: first from 1921 he was secretary of the Czechoslovak football association ČSSF, then of the association ČSAF, which includes all football associations in Czechoslovakia . Petrů later became a member of the technical commission of the ČSAF and in 1931 was first entrusted with the management of the Czechoslovak national team.

Petrů led the selection of the ČSR in a total of 18 games from 1931 to 1934. Of these, the Czechoslovaks won ten games, five games ended in a draw and three times the Czechoslovaks had to admit defeat to the opponent. The goal difference of the Petrů era was 39 goals scored and 28 goals conceded. Petrů used a total of 47 players in the three years of his activity.

Petrů was entrusted with the team leadership for the first time on June 14, 1931 together with Rudolf Pelikán , the Czechoslovak team defeated Poland 4-0 in Warsaw . Subsequently, his predecessor Josef Fanta took over again . For the second time Petrů was responsible for the Czechoslovak selection in three games in April and May 1932, then again Fanta and after him again Pelikán. Petrů's third term began in May 1933 and lasted until the end of 1934 , apart from the friendly against Yugoslavia on August 6, 1933, when Jaroslav Bezecný was in charge.

One of the greatest successes in Czechoslovak football history fell during Petrů's tenure: at the 1934 World Cup in Italy , the selection of the ČSR reached the final after victories over Romania (2: 1), Switzerland (3: 2) and Germany (3: 1) before, where after extra time they lost to hosts Italy 2-1.
