Replica of the weir storage facility (2011)

The Wodarg weir storage facility , also known as Kemlade Wodarg , is a fortified storage building found along the federal highway 20 west of Wodarg in the municipality of Werder (near Altentreptow) in today's Mecklenburg Lake District . A replica reconstructed based on the find is located near Klempenow Castle in the municipality of Breest .

Remnants of the weir store

In the run-up to the construction of the Federal Motorway 20 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2003, archaeologists came across the remains of a Yavian settlement from the 10th to 12th centuries about 1.5 km west of Wodarg, as well as a wooden weir store from the later early German period (coordinates: 53 ° 45 4.2 "  N , 13 ° 20" 1.5 "  O ). Using dendrochronology , it was found that the building was built around 1300 to 1301 from oak and alder stakes. The building, also known as Kemlade , had a floor area of 13.2 × 5.3 meters and had 2 floors. It was a half-timbered building . The weir store was interpreted as a storage building for harvest yields in the middle of a small artificial lake. The peat originally present on the site was removed, a pile foundation up to 3.5 m deep was built and the terrain was flooded by a ditch from Lake Wodarger . This lake, which no longer exists today, was still present in the Swedish survey in 1697, and was located north of the village of Wodarg. The weir storage facility could be reached from the mainland via three access bridges.

All wooden parts found during the excavations show signs of fire. It is therefore assumed that the weir store was attacked and burned down in 1360. The entire south wall fell into the lake and was best preserved.

Certainly this complex belonged to Castle Conerow . During the excavations, valuable bronze finds were still found . It is therefore assumed that the settlement consisting of at least 7 large houses could not have been a normal farming village, but that nobles could have lived here. Klempenow Castle is only a few kilometers downstream. Perhaps both castles were a kind of border post that was located on fords of then important trade routes across the Tollense . There is no further written information about these systems. The Bronze Age battlefield on the Tollense, found in 2009, may be related to such a ford.

With the support of the Demmin district, the wooden weir storage facility found nearby (coordinates: 53 ° 47 ′ 27.6 ″  N , 13 ° 18 ′ 52.7 ″  E ) was reconstructed by Klempenow near Breest. The construction was carried out as part of job promotion and employment measures. It is planned to set up a museum on the history of the weir storage facility and with information on the archaeological finds from the area.
