Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl contested the final , who reached it for the eighth time in a row. Becker prevailed 7: 6 ² , 1: 6, 6: 3, 7: 6 ⁴ and was the first German to win the US Open. It was his 4th of a total of 6 Grand Slam titles.
