Rostagno studied economics at Stanford University and was voted one of the best All-American choices in 1985 . 1986 he became a tennis professional; his best result on the ATP World Tour in his first year as a professional was the semi-finals at the tournament in Houston . The following year he began with another semifinal participation in Auckland and stood at the Miami Masters in the quarterfinals; here he benefited from the task of Boris Becker , who did not start his first round game. Towards the end of the year he reached the semi-finals of the Frankfurt Cup , where he was defeated by the eventual champion Tim Mayotte . Also in 1988 he played quite successfully and was in the semifinals of Bristol and Washington , the following year his best result was a semifinal participation in the Queen's Club . In 1990 he celebrated his first and only individual title on the ATP World Tour. In New Haven he defeated Paul Annacone , Tim Mayotte and Andrei Tschesnokow on the way to the final , in the final he was victorious against Todd Woodbridge . His best year on the tour, however, was the following. After victories over Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras , among others , he was in the Orlando final , in which he was defeated Andre Agassi in three sets . With wins over Jason Stoltenberg , Richey Reneberg , Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl , he reached the final of the Tokyo indoor tournament , which he lost in three sets against Stefan Edberg . He won his only double title on the ATP World Tour in 1993 at the side of Todd Martin in Tampa . He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1991 with position 13 in singles and in 1989 with position 142 in doubles.
His best individual result at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open in 1988, in which he was clearly defeated in three sets against defending champion Ivan Lendl. In addition, he reached the second round at the Australian Open and Wimbledon once. An outstanding game was the second round encounter against Boris Becker at the US Open 1989. Rostagno had two match points in the fourth set, Becker finally won the game with 1: 6, 6: 7, 6: 3, 7: 6, 6: 3 and later became tournament winner. In the doubles competition Rostagno reached the second round of the Australian Open in 1991.
In 1993, an injury forced Rostagno to interrupt his professional career for almost two years; During this time he began studying law at the University of California, Los Angeles . He made his comeback in mid-1995 and reached the semifinals in Newport shortly afterwards . He then played a few tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour and ended his career in the summer of 1996. Since 2004 he has practiced as a lawyer.
