Akira Santillan ( Japanese サ ン テ ィ ラ ン ア キ ラ Santiran Akira ; born May 22, 1997 in Tokyo ) is an Australian - Japanese tennis player who played for Japan between 2015 and July 2017.

Private

Santillan was born in Tokyo to a Japanese woman and a South African . When he was eight, his family moved to Gold Coast , Australia, where they also took citizenship. He played in his new hometown for many years before moving to Brisbane to take part in the national tennis program at the Queensland Tennis Center .

Career

On the Junior Tour in September 2015, he rose to seventh place in the world rankings. At the 2015 Australian Open, he achieved the best result in a Junior Grand Slam, a semi-final. In doubles he was in the final at the French Open with Lucas Miedler in 2014 and in Wimbledon with Reilly Opelka in 2015 .

Santillan decided to play for Japan from now on in early 2015 after a dispute with Tennis Australia .

From March 2015 Akira Santillan played regularly on the professional tour. He achieved his first successes straight away on the ITF Future Tour : a semi-final and two finals, one of which he was able to convert into a title, were recorded, so that by the end of the year he was already in 616 world ranking . By May 2016, he had already made up another 100 positions when he received a wildcard for qualifying for the Masters in Madrid . Here he was defeated by the Russian Michail Juschny 3: 6, 6: 7 (7: 9). After three future titles in four tournaments, the Japanese-Australian was able to take part in a Challenger tournament for the first time . In Cali , Colombia , he won against second seeded Alejandro González in straight sets before losing to Cristian Rodríguez . After all, thanks to recent successes, Santillan received a wildcard for an ATP World Tour tournament for the first time . In Kitzbühel he had no chance against Jan-Lennard Struff . In Shenzhen he lost one more time in round one of the main draw on the World Tour and in Trnava Santillan moved into a Challenger semi-final for the first time. In doubles he made it a little further: In Segovia and Ningbo he was in the final, although he was not granted a Challenger title. Akira Santillan ended his year in doubles in 216 and 319 respectively.

2017 started Santillan at the Bangkok Open , a Challenger tournament, where he was eliminated early. In qualifying for the Australian Open , he lost to Thomas Fabbiano in round two . He won his first individual Challenger title in Winnetka with a win in the final against Ramkumar Ramanathan . In July 2017 he decided to compete under the Australian flag from now on.
