Blaž Kavčič (born March 5, 1987 in Ljubljana ) is a Slovenian tennis player .

life and career

Up to 2005: career, junior career and first experiences at future tournaments

Blaž Kavčič started playing tennis at the age of four. The inspiration for this came from his grandfather Ludvig Dornik , who was himself a successful ski racer and had participated in the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo . The parents Alexander and Bojana Kavčič were also professional ski racers.

Blaž Kavčič was able to celebrate international success as a junior, so in 2005 he decided to pursue a career as a professional tennis player. He had already tried to qualify for tournaments in the adult sector in 2003, which he succeeded for the first time at a future tournament in Qatar in December 2004.

2006–2008: Future title and ATP debut

After he had reached the final of a satellite tournament in March 2006, Blaž Kavčič was appointed to the Slovenian Davis Cup team for the first time in April 2006 for the game against Algeria . Despite a win, however, he could not prevent the 3-2 defeat. In August and September 2006 Kavčič won two future tournaments in Croatia, and then made it into the top 500 of the tennis world rankings at the end of the year . In 2007 he could not win any tournaments, but he recorded first match wins at Challenger tournaments, and was able to improve his ranking further.

In February 2008 Blaž Kavčič was able to qualify for the first time for the main draw of an ATP tournament in Zagreb . However, he lost his first round match in three tight sets against Roko Karanušić . He did better in May 2008 in Pörtschach , where he won his first ATP match as a qualifier in the first round against Teimuras Gabashvili before he was eliminated in the second round against Igor Kunitsyn . In the course of 2008 he also reached the semi-finals of a Challenger tournament twice, and in the meantime achieved his best world ranking position to date with rank 232.

2009–2010: Challenger title, Grand Slam debut and entry into the Top 100 for the first time

The breakthrough came in 2009: In May 2009 Blaž Kavčič reached the final of three Challenger tournaments. After losing in Sanremo and Busan , he was finally able to win his first title in Alessandria against Jesse Levine . Just a month later, the next title followed in Constanța with a victory over Julian Reister before he lost another final in Rijeka . He defeated Mathieu Montcourt in the semifinals , who suddenly died just a few days later and had played his last tournament here. At the ATP level, Kavčič only played one match this year when he received a wildcard in Umag in July 2009 , but lost his first round match against Nicolás Massú . In qualifying for the Grand Slam tournaments in Wimbledon and New York , Kavčič failed in the third qualifying round. In the course of the year he had worked his way up in the world rankings from 285th to 125th place.

At the beginning of 2010, it worked for the first time at the Australian Open with the qualification for a Grand Slam tournament. In the first main round against Wayne Odesnik Blaž Kavčič was able to win the first set, but ultimately lost in four sets. A month later he reached the second round of an ATP tournament in Johannesburg by defeating Thierry Ascione for the second time, but where he was eliminated against the eventual winner Feliciano López . Due to good results at Challenger tournaments, he was able to achieve a place in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time in March 2010 with rank 96. As a result, he was directly qualified at the French Open , and met the top 50 player Eduardo Schwank in the first round . He gave up the match when Blaž Kavčič already led 2-1 sets and was 4-0 in the fourth set. In the second lap, Kavčič met Andy Roddick , who was sixth, to whom he lost in four sets after several interruptions in the rain. A month later he moved into the main field as a substitute at Wimbledon , but was eliminated in the first round against Łukasz Kubot . As a consolation, however, he was able to watch the World Cup match between Slovenia and England at home. Since he had meanwhile lost the points of the tournament victories from last year, Kavčič fell back in the world rankings to number 157 in July 2010. He then hired the Romanian Adrian Voinea as a new coach, who had been a tennis professional himself and an ATP in 1999 Tournament. The collaboration quickly bore fruit, because in August 2010 Blaž Kavčič was able to win his third Challenger title against Michael Venus in Qarshi . September 2010 was even more successful: both in Rijeka against Rubén Ramírez Hidalgo and in his hometown Ljubljana against David Goffin Kavčič was the tournament winner. This enabled him to work his way back to 102nd place in the world rankings. He also achieved a 3-2 win with the Slovenian Davis Cup team after smooth victories over Norway and Bulgaria in the decider against Lithuania and thus promotion to Europe / Africa Group I.

2011–2012: Establishment in the top 100

In January 2011 Blaž Kavčič reached an ATP quarter-finals for the first time in Chennai, among other things by defeating the top 50 player Jérémy Chardy . There he had no chance against the top seeded Tomáš Berdych , but rose again into the top 100 for the first time in a few months thanks to the world ranking points. At the Australian Open Kavčič was able to qualify successfully, and prevailed in the first main round in four sets against Kevin Anderson . In the second round against Mikhail Juschny , who was placed in 10th position , Kavčič was able to fight his way into a fifth set after a 2-2 set deficit, but lost it against the favorite. Two weeks later, Kavčič was able to qualify again for an ATP main field in Zagreb , and reached the second round after defeating Mischa Zverev . There he lost to the later finalist Michael Berrer . Also at the following tournament in Delray Beach Blaž Kavčič was eliminated as a qualifier in the second round against the later finalist Janko Tipsarević . In April 2011 Kavčič reached after further defeats in the second round in Casablanca and Barcelona in Belgrade for the second time this season an ATP quarter-finals, but there was no chance against the top seeded eventual winner Novak Đoković . At the French Open he reached the second round by beating Ernests Gulbis as in the previous year, where he was defeated by Juan Martín del Potro, who was placed 25th . The following grass season was not very successful for Blaž Kavčič: In three tournaments, including Wimbledon , he was eliminated in the first round. Things went better in July 2011 at the clay court tournament in Båstad , where he lost to Tomáš Berdych in the quarter-finals, as in Chennai. In August 2011 Kavčič parted ways with his coach Adrian Voinea after a year and hired Blaž Trupej as the new coach. At the Challenger tournament in Qarshi he then reached the final as in the previous year, but had to admit defeat in three sets to local hero Denis Istomin . After a second round defeat at the US Open preparatory tournament in Winston-Salem , Blaž Kavčič was eliminated from the US Open in four sets against Ivan Ljubičić in the first round . In September 2011, he won his first Challenger title of the year by beating Pere Riba in the final in Banja Luka and ended the year in the top 100.

At the Australian Open 2012 Blaž Kavčič reached the second round by defeating James Ward as in the previous year, where he was eliminated from the later quarter-finalist Juan Martín del Potro, who was 11th . At ATP level, he has not yet won a match in four tournaments this year, but he reached a Challenger final in Florianópolis at the beginning of March , which he lost to Simone Bolelli . At the end of April 2012 Kavčič was in another Challenger final in São Paulo and won his first title of the year against Júlio Silva . After he was eliminated at the beginning of June 2012 at the French Open in the second round against world number one and later finalist Novak Đoković , he won his second Challenger title of the year a week later in Fürth by beating Serhij Stachowskyj in the final . After participating in the semi-finals at the following Challenger tournament in Monza , Kavčič achieved his best position in the world rankings with 71st place.

particularities

With 71st place in the world rankings, Blaž Kavčič was for a while the best-placed Slovenian tennis player in history and also the first to make it into the top 100 in the world rankings. With his qualification for the Australian Open 2010 he became only the third player from Slovenia after Grega Žemlja and Luka Gregorc to qualify for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. At the French Open 2010 he was together with Žemlja (who also won his first round match at the same time) the first Slovene to win a Grand Slam match.
