Julian Reister (born April 2, 1986 in Hamburg ) is a former German tennis player .

life and career

2004–2007: Beginnings on the Future Tour and ATP debut

Julian Reister started playing tennis at the age of 5. His first coach was his father Jürgen Reister, who died when Julian was 10 years old.

From 2004 Reister played future tournaments, and in 2005 he reached his first single final at such a tournament, as well as two wins in doubles with his partner Jerome Becker.

In 2006 he reached two more finals in future tournaments and two more wins in doubles. He also took part in Challenger tournaments this year and qualified for the main draw of a tournament on the ATP Tour for the first time in Basel in October 2006 . There he failed in the first round to Guillermo García-López . As a result, he entered the top 400 in the world rankings for the first time and ended the year in 327th place.

In 2007, three more future finals followed, as well as another double victory at Tobias Kamke's side . In Basel he was able to qualify for the main field again, as in the previous year, but again he failed in the first round to Roko Karanušić . His year-end ranking was 296th.

2008–2009: Establishment on the Challenger Tour

He was able to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the Australian Open in January 2008 , but lost to Robin Haase in the second round . The greatest success of his career so far succeeded Reister in September 2008 at the Challenger tournament in Trnava , where he first qualified for the main draw and then advanced to the final, where he was defeated by Alberto Martín .

In February 2009 Julian Reister won his first title in a future tournament. That year he took part in three Grand Slam tournaments in qualification, but never got past the second round. Noteworthy is his victory over Gastón Gaudio in qualifying for the US Open 2009 , who had won the French Open five years earlier. In addition, he reached the final of a Challenger tournament in June 2009 in Constanța and in September 2009 in Banja Luka and achieved his best position in the world tennis rankings with rank 149 .

2010: Grand Slam debut at the French Open and Wimbledon

2010 began with a successful qualification for the Brisbane ATP tournament , followed by a first round loss to Florent Serra . Afterwards Reister again missed qualifying for the Australian Open , but in February the Challenger tournament in Kazan made it into the finals of both the singles and doubles competition (alongside Tobias Kamke). In May 2010 Julian Reister was able to qualify for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the French Open after victories over Filippo Volandri , Conor Niland and Carlos Berlocq , where he sensationally beat Feliciano López, who was number 27, in three in the first round Sets defeated. In the second round he also defeated Olivier Rochus in three sets and then in the third round he met the world number one and defending champion Roger Federer , whom he himself describes as his idol. Reister was able to keep up well in the first set, but then clearly lost in three sets. As a reward for his achievements in Paris, he received prize money of 42,000 euros and climbed to number 129 in the world rankings, his best position to date. A month later Reister failed at Wimbledon after victories over Yannick Mertens and Andrej Martin in the third qualifying round to Brendan Evans . However, as one of seven lucky losers, he still got a starting place in the main field and met Rik De Voest there in the first lap . He defeated this in four sets, but then lost to Xavier Malisse in the second round . Julian Reister got a wildcard at the German Open at Rothenbaum in Hamburg near his hometown Reinbek . After victories over Daniel Brands and the seeded Victor Hănescu , he reached the second round of an ATP tournament for the first time in his career. Against Denis Istomin he was able to win the first set and was already ahead with a break in the third set, but ultimately lost the set and the match in the tie-break . Due to good results at Challenger tournaments, Reister was able to advance to world number 102 in the following months. In October 2010, at the ATP tournament in Montpellier , he met Richard Gasquet, who was 7th in the first round . Reister was able to win the first set, but in the end lost the match in three sets after more than two hours.

2011: First Challenger title and entry into the top 100

At the beginning of 2011, Julian Reister had to cancel several tournaments due to a viral illness. From mid-February 2011 Reister tried to qualify for several ATP tournaments, but never made it into the main field. At his first clay court tournament this season, the Challenger in Monza , Reister found his way back on the road to success: After having to fend off Federico Delboni's match balls in the second round , he made it into the final by beating Andreas Beck, among other things . There he won his first challenger title against local hero Alessio di Mauro , and this success made it into the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time. At the ATP tournament in Munich at the end of April 2011, Reister successfully played his way through the qualification and reached the second round after defeating compatriot Daniel Brands . There he was able to win the first set against Nikolai Dawydenko , but ultimately failed in three sets on the eventual tournament winner. At the French Open , he could not repeat his success from the previous year, but retired in the first round against Viktor Troicki, who was in 15th position . A dry spell followed with six first round defeats in seven tournaments, including at Wimbledon , where Reister lost to David Nalbandian . As a result, he fell back to rank 156 in the world rankings. It was not until July 2011 at his home tournament in Hamburg , where he received a wildcard again, as in the previous year, that Julian Reister found his way back on the road to success: First he won against in the first round Denis Istomin , against whom he was eliminated the previous year. In the second round, he also defeated Guillermo García-López, who was 14th in position, in two sets. In the round of 16, however, as last year, Reister was the last stop when he was eliminated by the later semi-finalist Michail Juschny .

2016: End of career

Julian Reister ended his career as a professional tennis player in October 2016.

Career as a club player

Julian Reister played in the Second Tennis Bundesliga for TC Logopak Hartenholm , which, however, had to stop playing in 2009 due to financial problems. Even the players' suggestion to forego any salary could not save the club from collapse. In 2010 Reister played together with his former teammate Tobias Kamke for the first division club TC Blau-Weiss Neuss . For the 2011 season he then moved to the two-time German champion TK Kurhaus Aachen .

Since 2018 he has played for the club on the Alster Hamburg in the 2nd Bundesliga .
