Mammillaria phitauiana is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet phitauiana refers to the American student fraternity Phi Kappa Tau to which the first descriptor Edgar Martin Baxter belonged.
description
Mammillaria phitauiana sprouts from the base and forms small groups. The cylindrically shaped shoots are gray-green. They grow up to 25 centimeters high with a diameter of 3 to 6 centimeters. The roots are arranged like strands. The conically shaped warts on four sides from the base are keeled and without milky sap . The axillae are covered with about 20 bristles. The 4 central spines are straight, white with a dark tip and only 4 to 6 millimeters long. A hooked central spine was often observed in the youth stage. The 24 radial spines are white and bristle-like. They are 4 to 12 millimeters long.
The white flowers are 1.2 to 1.5 inches in diameter and just as long. The spherical or club-shaped fruits are red and up to 1 centimeter long. They contain black seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria phitauiana is common in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur .
It was first described in 1931 as Neomammillaria phitauiana by Edgar Martin Baxter . Curt Backeberg introduced the species to Mammillaria in the same year . Synonyms of Mammillaria phitauiana (EMBaxter) Werderm. ex Backeb. are Mammillaria dioica f. phitauiana (EMBaxter) Neutel. (1986), Cochimea phitauiana (EMBaxter) Doweld (2000), Mammillaria verhaertiana Boed. (1912), Chilita verhaertiana (Boed.) Orcutt (1926), Ebnerella verhaertiana (Boed.) Buxb. (1951) and Mammillaria dioica f. verhaertiana (Boed.) Neutel. (1986).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
