Sebastian Ofner (born May 12, 1996 in Bruck an der Mur ) is an Austrian tennis player .

Career

Sebastian Ofner, who lives in Sankt Marein in the Mürz Valley , has been training at the ÖTV performance center in Südstadt since he was 14 , where he is looked after by Wolfgang Thiem - Dominic Thiem's father - and fitness trainer Florian Pernhaupt. After graduating from high school , he started a career as a competitive athlete in the armed forces .

Ofner, whose preferred surface is sand, mainly plays on the ITF Future Tour , where he has won five titles so far. In October 2016 he took part in the qualification for an ATP tournament in Vienna for the first time, but failed there because of Jan-Lennard Struff . In 2017 he made more appearances on the Challenger Tour . In May he reached his first final at this level in Mestre , where he was defeated by João Domingues in two sets. Before that, the Styrian had already participated twice in the Davis Cup as a sparring partner .

On June 29, 2017 , he qualified for the first time at Wimbledon for the main competition of a Grand Slam tournament and for the first time ever to take part in an ATP World Tour tournament . In the first round he beat number 55 in the world rankings, the Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci , in three sets. With another victory over the number 17 seeded Jack Sock , whom he defeated in five sets, he moved into the third round, in which he was defeated Germany's number one Alexander Zverev in three sets. Four weeks later he reached the semi-finals at the Generali Open in Kitzbühel thanks to a wildcard , in which he was defeated by João Sousa in two sets. He was unable to build on his Wimbledon success the following year and already failed in qualifying. A few weeks later he won his first Challenger tournament in Astana with a final victory against the German Daniel Brands .

His highest place in the ATP ranking to date was a 129th place on August 7, 2017. A good year earlier, he was 571th. In 2018 he made his debut for the Austrian Davis Cup team .
