Västerhaninge is a village ( Tatort ) with over 17,000 inhabitants (2015) in the Swedish municipality of Haninge in the province of Stockholm County .

Västerhaninge is located in the southern part of the municipality and borders in the north on the forest and park landscape of Hanveden, in the east only separated by an area with sports fields at Jordbro , in the south on a larger agricultural landscape and in the west on a hilly region with the Jungfruberget mountain. The distance to the main town of Handen is about 6 km. Västerhaninge is separated into a northern and a southern part by the railway line.

Location structure

Much of the residential areas emerged in the 1960s and 1980s. The oldest residential buildings date from the 1940s. The structure is mixed with single-family houses, apartment buildings and townhouses. Due to the severe shortage of living space in the Stockholm area , several new development areas are planned. There is a modern business center at the train station and several shops in the individual districts.

The industry is mainly concentrated in the Håga business park , where mainly craft and manufacturing businesses are located.

Sweden's only Mormon temple is located in the village . It was inaugurated in 1985 and is called Sista dagars heligas tempel i Stockholm .

Sports

In Västerhaninge there are several sports fields, an ice rink, an illuminated jogging and cross-country skiing circuit and various riding facilities. The Hanveden forest area adjoining the village also offers a variety of opportunities for sporting activities and local recreation.

Västerhaninge is connected to Stockholm and the ferry port Nynäshamn by Pendeltåg . During rush hour four trains run to Stockholm and two to Nynäshamn every hour. The journey time is around 30 minutes.

There is a bus station directly at the railway station, from which several lines serve the surrounding areas.

The town's road network has been expanded in recent years, including with roundabouts and the redesign of streets into avenues . Reichsweg 73 , which is currently taking on a motorway-like appearance, runs parallel to Västerhaninge .

The rune stone of Västerhaninge (Sö 237) is located south of Västerhaninge .
