The island of Fjärdlång is part of the Stockholm archipelago . It has been a nature reserve since 1986 .
Geography and nature
Fjärdlång has an area of 10 km² and is located south of the Swedish capital Stockholm in the municipality of Haninge . The highest point is the 36 meter high Tysta Klint . Fjärdlång is particularly popular as a holiday island for children. It has beautiful bays and cliffs where tourists can kayak, swim and fish. The island is forested and there are remains of farmland. There is also an important resting place for birds.
history
The archipelago has been inhabited since the 14th century, and in 1533 the Swedish crown under King Gustav Vasa claimed ownership of Fjärdlång. The well-known Swedish Wallenberg family lived here in the 19th century . In 1909 it was bought by the Swedish banker and art dealer Ernest Thiel , who had a summer villa built here, which is now used as a hotel. Today it belongs to the Swedish state, which declared it a protected landscape area on May 5, 1986 .
