Kymmendö , sometimes called Kymendö (and called by the people of the island Tjymmendö ), is a Swedish island northeast of the larger island of Ornö in the municipality of Haninge in Stockholm's southern archipelago in Stockholm County , about seven kilometers east-southeast of Dalarö near the Jungfrufjärden fjärd .

history

A fish farm owned by the Krone has been recorded on Kymmendö since 1539. Originally, Kymmendö was owned by the crown, but in the 1600s it became the property of the owners of Tyresö Castle . The island was bought in 1802 by the captain of the merchant navy Carl Petter Blom, who gave the island, the surrounding islands and the fishing rights to his nephew. Since then, the island has belonged to the same family for over 200 years. Today Kymmendö belongs to the Wahlström family, the 27 members of the family represent the entire population of the island.

The Wahlström brothers run a small boatyard, a service station for boats, a shop, an inn and agriculture. They make small caissons for private moorings.

The islanders also make their living from tourism and offer guided hikes during the summer. The Waxholmsbolaget ships approach the jetty on the island . Some visitors to the island use the natural harbors on both sides of the island.

Culture

Kymmendö and its residents inspired August Strindberg to write the novel Die Menschen auf Hemsö ( Swedish : Hemsöborna ). Strindberg came to the island for the first time in 1871 as a young summer visitor together with some fellow students , then again in the summer of 1872 and 1873. In 1880 he came back to the island with his wife Siri von Essen and spent the summers from 1881 to 1883 here.

After the novel “The People on Hemsö” was published in 1887 , Strindberg was no longer welcome on the island and had to move his summer stays to Dalarö .

In the summer of 1881 he had company from Carl Larsson on the island , for whose book Svenska folket i helg och söcken he did illustrations . His works Master Olof and Das neue Reich were created in his office, a hut . This hut and the summer residence rented by the family and the lilac hedge that he has planted have been preserved. The writing room is maintained by the Strindberg Society and is open to visitors. The novel “The People on Hemsö” was not written on the island of Kymmendö but during a stay in Switzerland .

The poet Werner Aspenström came to Kymmendö for the first time in the summer of 1941 and spent over 50 summers there. During this time the island was visited by many famous writers, including Stig Dagerman , Karl Vennberg and Bengt Anderberg . In 1946, Stig Dagerman wrote his novel De dömdas ö ( German : The Island of the Damned ) on Kymmendö and Werner Aspenström the poem Ikaros och gossen Gråsten .
