Svenska Högarna is a Swedish archipelago in Blidö socken in Norrtälje commun in the Stockholm archipelago in Stockholm County .

history

The archipelago is the northeasternmost point in the Stockholm archipelago. It is located about 18 nautical miles east of the northern tip of Möja . Svenska Högarna are the most remote inhabited islands in the country. There are no regular boat connections to the islands.

The largest island in the group is Storön. The Svenska Högarna lighthouse has stood there since 1874 .

Svenska Högarna was mentioned in the writings of the Julita monastery in Södermanland as early as 1488. The island Storön had a fishing port where monks against salt herring the drain members. There was a chapel with a cemetery still preserved today. To the north of the cemetery are rock labyrinths, the so-called Troy castles.

In the 1700s a royal decree was issued appointing the villagers of Kudoxa and Rödlöga as pilots for Svenska Högarna. The first permanent pilot station was established in 1793. In the 1870s, the state took over the archipelago through expropriation .

Nature reserve

Svenska Högarna is a nature reserve as part of the Natura 2000 program and has an interesting marine fauna. The islands attract many migratory birds, including guillemots . The islands are characterized by rugged cliffs and low-creeping junipers . There are two glacier pots on Storön , which are called the pants of Jättegubben and Trollgubben .

Residents

In 2005 there were four people living on the island. These work for Naturvårdsverket and Skärgårdsstiftelsen , and SMHI ( Sveriges meteorologiska och hydrologiska institut ) also operates a weather station on the island.
