Rödlöga

Rödlöga is an island in the Stockholm archipelago and belongs to the municipality of Norrtälje in the Swedish province of Stockholm County and the historic province of Uppland .

Rödlöga takes its name from the reddish glowing feldspar that is visible everywhere . Due to its outer location in the Stockholm archipelago, fewer trees grow on the rocky island in contrast to other archipelago islands.

During the summer there are around 150 households on Rödlöga. The households are not connected to an electricity grid, but many islanders use alternative energy sources such as wind power or solar energy. There is no road on the island; the houses, including unadulterated old houses with classic parlors, are only connected by a network of paths. According to an old regulation, no fences may be put up around the houses in the village. A small museum, a second-hand bookstore, a small café and the Rödlögaboden, the easternmost shop in the Stockholm archipelago, are available for tourists . Small bays in the south-east give you the opportunity to swim.

history

The first known settlement dates from the 16th century, the first known resident was called Lasse Svensson and moved to Rödlöga in 1530, the last resident of the original population left the island in 1979. Originally the village was in the middle of the island, which at that time was still divided by a waterway. This allowed boats to approach the town from the north and south. After the land rose by half a meter over time, the villagers gradually built their homes on the northeast side of the island in order to live closer to the water.

Around the year 1900 about 85 people still lived on Rödlöga. They planted and harvested potatoes, hunted and mostly fishing. A large part of the catch was sold to Norrtälje and Stockholm.

There has been a permanent ferry connection since 1954 to transport goods for the island business and to attract tourists. The ferry is now operated by the shipping company Waxholmsbolaget and connects Rödlöga with the island of Furusund and the Strömkajen , a quay and a street in central Stockholm.
