Roslagen is now the name for a region on the coast of the historic Swedish province of Uppland . It comprises mainland sections on the Baltic Sea and the offshore islands ( skerries ).

There is no clear definition of the region's borders. According to broad descriptions, Roslagen extends from Danderyd in the south to Östhammar in the north. A large number of people limit the region to the municipalities of Vaxholm , Österåker , Norrtälje and Östhammar . Furthermore, the municipalities of Danderyd , Lidingö , Täby and Vallentuna claim to be part of Roslagen, as they belonged to the former Thingordnung “Södra Roslags domsaga”.

The name Roslagen developed in the 15th century from the old Swedish terms Roden and Skeppslag . Roden was the name for the regions in the land of the Svear , which had to provide rowers in the event of war. This did not only apply to today's Roslagen region, but also to other Swedish areas such as Södermanland and the coast of Östergötland . Skeppslag was the local equivalent of the term Harde . The administrative district, which formed a skeppslag, was responsible for equipping a ship with a crew (mostly 25 people) including weapons and provisions.
