Sigrid “Siri” Sofia Matilda Elisabet von Essen (born August 17, 1850 in Borgå , † April 21, 1912 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish-Swedish actress .

Life

Her parents were Captain Karl Reinhold von Essen and the actress Elisabet Charlotta In de Betou. Siri was raised at home by a French-speaking governess . When she was 13, her family moved to Paris , where she spent a few months in a convent school. After the family was forced to sell their property, they moved to Stockholm in 1868 . With her first husband, Lieutenant Baron Carl Gustaf Wrangel af Sauss (married from 1872 to 1876), she had their daughter Sigrid in 1873, who, however, died in 1877. In 1875 Siri met August Strindberg and a year later she and her husband decided to get a divorce because Siri wanted to work as an actress, which would have been incompatible with her husband's rank and social position. Siri took theater lessons in the fall of 1876 and had her first appearance as an actress at Dramaten in Stockholm in 1877 . Siri married August Strindberg on December 30 of the same year. Their first child was born shortly afterwards, but died a few days after the birth.

In 1882 Strindberg wrote two pieces directly for Siri: Mr. Bengts Hustru and Lycko-Pers resa . Their daughter Karin was born in 1880, Greta in 1881. When she became pregnant again, the dramatist fired her. In 1883 the family went abroad and lived in France and Switzerland . Their son Hans was born in 1884. After the court case following the publication of Strindberg's collection of novels Giftas ( Marriage ) , August decided never to return to Sweden. In Grez-sur-Loing , Siri made friends with the Danish Marie David. August accused the two of having a lesbian relationship. In 1888, August and Siri started a "Scandinavian experimental theater" in Denmark. Siri played the title role in Fröken Julie ( Miss Julie ) . The theater was closed again due to poor economic efficiency. Siri and August moved back to Stockholm in 1889 and began divorce negotiations the following year. The marriage ended in 1891. In the spring of 1893, the divorce became official and Siri was granted the right to bring up her children. She moved with them to Finland and provided for herself and the children with translation work and theater lessons.

She died of a stroke in 1912 and is buried in Solna . Their children died too.

After the divorce, August Strindberg wrote En dåres försvarstal (The Confession of a Fool) , which is about their relationship.
