Stig Dagerman

Stig Halvard Dagerman (born October 5, 1923 in Älvkarleby , † November 4, 1954 in Enebyberg near Stockholm ) was a Swedish journalist and writer .

Life

Stig Dagerman, son of a demolisher and a telephone operator, grew up with his paternal grandparents. His mother left him right after he was born. The father cared little about him. Everyday farming life on Norrgärdet , a barren, poor farm on the sandy banks of the Dalälven , shaped his childhood. He later described this phase of life as happy but not carefree: "Interest was one of the first words I learned, and I know that if a house is in debt to over the roof beams, then it's not just a phrase." Also deep marks The experiences as a teenager left behind in his works. Above everything lay the shadow of an "insane act": his grandfather was stabbed to death in 1940 by a psychopath. Dagerman felt abandoned. At the grammar school in Stockholm his classmates ridiculed him as a clumsy farm boy. He delivered newspapers on the weekends. A school literature competition should cheer him up: Dagerman won a week-long stay in the mountains. But the trip ended tragically when a friend and roommate died in an avalanche accident.

At the end of school, Dagerman realized his calling to work as a writer and journalist. In Stockholm he joined the syndicalist union Sveriges Arbetares Centralorganisation (SAC) and wrote columns , reports and articles for their weekly Arbetaren until his death . In the literary field he made his debut at the age of 22. In Die Schlange , Dagerman describes the horror of the inferno of a world torn apart by war and barbarism and his depressing experiences during his military service. In late autumn 1946, Dagerman made a trip to war-torn Germany on behalf of the newspaper " Expressen ". He reported on this trip in twelve newspaper articles and they appeared collectively in May 1947. The book was discussed extensively after its publication, for the most part very positively. In the magazine “Veckojournal” Stig Ahlgren said that the book was “a high point in Swedish reportage in the visual parts”. In 2009, director Michael Gaumnitz shot based on the travel reports 1946, Autumn in Germany .

The Swede became known beyond the borders of his homeland and threw himself into his most productive creative period. Until 1947 he wrote several short stories and novels . He is said to have typed the last sections of The Island of the Damned , printed about 60 pages, in one go in a fourteen-hour session.

Years of personal crisis followed. His financial affairs slipped away from him. Writer's block was added: “I have no philosophy in which I could move like the bird in the air and the fish in the water. All I have is a duel, and in every moment of my life this duel rages between the false consolations that only increase my impotence and deepen my despair, and these real consolations that lead me to a fleeting liberation, ”he wrote about at the time themselves. Dagerman began a series of suicide attempts that came to an end on November 4, 1954 when he choked himself in his car garage. Her marriage to actress Anita Björk in 1953 had already failed by then. A daughter emerged from the relationship.

Stig Dagerman's biography and his works form a motif in Siegfried Lenz 's novel Die Klangprobe . The Stig Dagermansällskap keeps the memory of the writer in his place of birth . She has awarded the Stig Dagerman Prize annually since 1996 . So far his recipients have included a. Elfriede Jelinek , Lukas Moodysson and Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio .
