- January 1. bis 1. December : The Roman North Contre Sud of Jules Verne appears as a serial story in the Magasin d'Éducation et de Récréation . The novel itself will be published in two volumes on May 26th and November 14th by Pierre-Jules Hetzel's publishing house in Paris.
- February: Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach publishes her main work, the novel Das Gemeindekind .
- October 3 : The novel Le Chemin de France ( The Road to France ) by the French author Jules Verne is published by Pierre-Jules Hetzel in Paris. In the same volume there is also the short story Gil Braltar .
- November: A Study in Scarlett ( A Study in Scarlet ), the first detective novel Sir Arthur Conan Doyle , appear in the magazine Beeton's Christmas Annual as a cover story. In it the detective Sherlock Holmes has his first appearance.
- The story The Canterville Ghost ( The Canterville Ghost ) by the Irish writer Oscar Wilde appears in the London magazine The Court and Society Review - it is the first narrative work of the writer.
- The novel Noli me tangere by the later Filipino national hero José Rizal appears. In it he denounces the injustices of the Catholic priests and the arbitrary rule of the Spanish colonial government.
- Émile Zola writes the novel La Terre ( The Earth ). It forms the fifteenth part of the twenty-volume Rougon-Macquart cycle .
- The story The Event in the Schrun by Peter Rosegger appears.
- By Theodor Storm , the amendment appears a doppelganger in a book edition.

- November 14th : August Strindberg's drama Fadren ( The Father ) has its world premiere in Copenhagen.
- Anton Pawlowitsch Chekhov wrote the play Ivanov , originally as a comedy .

- March 4 : When George Hearst takes office as Senator, he hands over the management of his newspaper The Daily Examiner to his son William Randolph Hearst , which he renames the San Francisco Examiner . The gradual development of a newspaper empire began.
- March 22nd : The first edition of the daily El Espectador appears in Colombia , which is now the country's oldest newspaper.

- July 26th : History of Esperanto : Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof in Warsaw publishes the textbook on his “International Language” under the pseudonym Doktoro Esperanto, first in Russian . Further brochures in other languages will follow soon. The pseudonym remains as the name of the language: Esperanto .
- December 5 : The Bern Convention for the Protection of Works of Literature and Art comes into force in the German Reich.
