- Jerome K. Jerome publishes the novel Three Men in a Boat . The book was originally planned as a serious travel guide with stories about the history of places along the route, but the humorous descriptions ultimately got the upper hand. The three men are based on Jerome himself and his friends George and Harris.
- Mark Twain publishes the satirical novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court .
- The novel Sans dessus dessous ( The Shot on Kilimanjaro ) by Jules Verne is published by Pierre-Jules Hetzel .
- Bertha von Suttner publishes Lay down your arms! published by Edgar Pierson in Dresden. Within a short period of time, the pacifist novel achieved outstanding popularity and distribution.

- Theodor Fontane publishes the fifth and final volume of the walks through the Mark Brandenburg with the title Five Castles .

- July 12 : In Vienna, following the ban on equality, the first edition of the Arbeiter-Zeitung appears , the first editor-in-chief is Victor Adler .

- February 12 : The play Fruen fra havet ( The Woman from the Sea ), written by the Norwegian poet Henrik Ibsen last year, premieres in two locations at the same time : at the Hoftheater in Weimar and at the Christiania Theater. Bjørn Bjørnson is directing the Norwegian production . The piece is received mostly positively.
- March 14th : The tragedy Fräulein Julie by the Swedish playwright August Strindberg premieres in Copenhagen, with Strindberg's wife Siri von Essen playing the leading role . The play is still one of the author's most played. In his native Sweden, however, the piece was not performed for the first time until 1906.
- April 5th : The theater association Freie Bühne is founded in Berlin . The aim of the association is to circumvent the Prussian censorship and to be able to present its members with modern theater plays in a "closed performance". On September 29 at 12 noon is the Lessingtheater ghosts of Henrik Ibsen was the first piece of the outdoor stage set. On October 20 , the piece follows Before dawn of Gerhart Hauptmann as a world premiere and created a tangible theatrical scandal .
Scientific works, essays
- Friedrich Nietzsche's work Götzen-Dämmerung or How to philosophize with the hammer, which was created in the previous year, is published. In January Nietzsche had a mental breakdown.
- Othniel Charles Marsh describes the dinosaur genus Triceratops for the first time .
