- April 19 : Oscar Wilde's comedy A Woman of No Importance has its world premiere at the Theater Royal Haymarket in London.
- May 16 : The play Pelléas et Mélisande by Maurice Maeterlinck is premiered at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris. It is considered the main work of the theater of symbolism .
- The play Anatol by Arthur Schnitzler will be premiered. The work, to which Hugo von Hofmannsthal wrote an introduction under a pseudonym, earned Schnitzler the title "psychological depth researcher" by Sigmund Freud .
