- March 15 : Under the influence of the Great Snowstorm of 1888 , the Cuban writer José Martí writes the experience report Nueva York bajo la nieve ( New York under the snow ), which is published on April 27 in the Argentine magazine La Nación .
- April: Three months before his death, Theodor Storm publishes the novella Der Schimmelreiter , which he completed in February after two years of work.
- May: Oscar Wilde published the collection of fairy tales The Happy Prince and Other Tales ( The Happy Prince and Other Tales ). Wildes work with the art fairy tales The Happy Prince , The Nightingale and the Rose , The Selfish Giant and others contains illustrations by Walter Crane .
- June 18 : The first volume of the adventure novel Deux ans de vacances ( Two Years of Holidays ) by Jules Verne is published by Hetzel-Verlag . The second volume will be released on November 8th .
- August / September: The short story Der Pfarrersbub by Peter Rosegger appears.
- Theodor Fontane's novel Irrungen, Wirrungen is published as a book edition by FW Steffens in Leipzig.
- Rudyard Kipling publishes the story The Man Who Wanted to Be King .

- November 28th : The play Fruen fra havet ( The Woman from the Sea ) by the Norwegian poet Henrik Ibsen in Munich is published by Gyldendalske Boghandel in Copenhagen and Kristiania.
- The Swedish playwright August Strindberg wrote the tragedy Fröken Julie ( Fräulein Julie ).

- Friedrich Nietzsche makes extensive notes for his planned work The Will to Power , which he gives up in the summer.
- September 30th : Nietzsche finishes work on his work The Antichrist in Turin .
- Friedrich Nietzsche wrote the works Götzen-Twilight or How to philosophize with the hammer , Nietzsche contra Wagner and Der Fall Wagner .
- Nietzsche starts working on Ecce Homo . In all of these late works he continues the concept of revaluing all values .

- December 13 : Heinrich Hertz informs the Berlin Academy of Sciences about the existence of electromagnetic waves in his report On Rays of Electric Power . His discovery provided the decisive impetus for developments in the direction of wireless telegraphy and broadcasting .

- June 24th : Pope Leo XIII. advises the Irish through the bishops in the encyclical Saepe nos on obedience, justice and legal action in times of upheaval in Ireland .
- December 10th : In the encyclical Quam aerumnosa , Pope Leo XIII worries . about the Italian immigrants in America. A shortage of priests and language problems could have repercussions on the giving of the sacraments . Sent clergy from Italy are supposed to remedy the bottleneck.
