biography
Delius went to school in Bremen. After graduating , he studied philosophy, history, Greek literature and Sanskrit at the University of Bonn and the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität-Berlin . Delius completed his doctorate in Bonn in 1838 (dissertation: Radices pracriticae) and taught in Berlin. In 1844/1845 he wrote in Bremen for the new Weser newspaper, among others . A year later he decided to work as a private lecturer in Bonn. It was there that his interest in the works of William Shakespeare began.
Delius became famous for his Shakespeare edition, which he published between 1854 and 1860. This gave him, who had held a double professorship for French and English since 1855, a chair in English until 1880 , the first ever in Germany. Delius was co-founder and for a long time chairman of the German Shakespeare Society and wrote a large number of essays, treatises and translations on this topic. He bequeathed his valuable Shakespeare collection to the Bremen City Library .
Since 1837 he was a corps bow bearer of Guestphalia Bonn .
Delius rests in the Waller Friedhof in Bremen in the Schüssler-Delius-Gruner family grave (grave number J 137).
