Ludwig Steub was born as the child of Andreas Steub (royal Bavarian foundation administrator of the regional court) and Josephine Steub (née Wacker) in Aichach .

Steub first attended the (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich and graduated in 1829. In self-study he learned several languages and studied philosophy and philology before switching to law . Against his parents' wishes, he wanted to go to Greece , where Otto I had become king, and successfully applied to the government there, albeit not as a university professor or governor, as he wished, but as Secretary of the Regency. The Bavarians active in the administration there were divided into several camps and quarreled among themselves; Steub tried to stay out of these conflicts.

In 1845 he settled as a lawyer in Munich and then held the office of notary from 1863 to 1880 . From 1837 to 1885 he was a member of the Munich casual society .

When Steub pointed out in January 1866 in the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung with reference to the Judenstein in Rinn (Tyrol) that the Eucharistic pilgrimage to the grave church in Deggendorf (" Deggendorfer Gnad ") was based on a cover-up of the Jewish pogroms of 1337 and 1338 , he got involved in a ten-year polemic in which he developed his point of view. Steub's views were ultimately recognized by the church, and in 1992 the pilgrimage was officially discontinued.

Services

Steub was a writer who is considered to be his literary “discoverer”, especially because of his descriptions of the land and customs of Tyrol . He also made a name for himself as a pioneer in Tyrolean place name research , especially with regard to the Rhaetian language . His travel descriptions and stories , which mostly deal with the Alpine region , were occasionally published later, although he has long been counted among the "forgotten writers". An anti-clerical tone is noticeable in his works , which is directed against the overly complacent Catholicism that he experienced in Bavaria . It was only with his help that the Ritterschauspiele Kiefersfelden syndicate managed to maintain and secure the continued existence of their village theater between 1860 and 1868. Thanks to Steub's books, summer vacation became a common term in Germany .
