The language is an international linguistic journal that works on the principle of peer review . It was founded in 1949 by Paul Kretschmer , Wilhelm Havers and Wilhelm Czermak . The language brings contributions to topics of historical and comparative linguistics , in particular Indo-European studies (Indo-European studies). The focus is not only on comparative grammar and etymology , but also on source studies, epigraphy , linguistic text interpretation as well as cultural and intellectual historical aspects.

The journal is published by Harrassowitz Verlag ( Wiesbaden ); as a rule, two issues appear per year. On behalf of the Wiener Sprachgesellschaft, Hans Christian Luschützky, Robert Nedoma and Stefan Schumacher are currently acting as editors with the assistance of Wolfgang Hock, Martin Joachim Kümmel, Melanie Malzahn, Daniel Petit, Jeremy Rau, David Stifter, Chlodwig H. Werba and Paul Widmer.
