- January-April: The novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James appears as a serial story in the weekly magazine Collier's with illustrations by Eric Pape . When he wrote the novella, Henry James was unable to write himself because of a wrist disease. He cannot deal with the new invention of the typewriter , so he has to rely on a secretary to whom he dictates the story.
- The short story Die Kreuzhüttenbuben by Peter Rosegger appears in the October issue of the Graz Heimgarten .
- The story Ewald Tragy by Rainer Maria Rilke will be written in the second half of the year.
- The novel An old dispute by Wilhelmine von Hillern is published, which deals with the Haberfeld drift, which was still common in the Bavarian Oberland in the 1860s .

- The novel Raudsed käed ( Iron Hands ) by the Estonian writer Eduard Vilde appears as a sequel in the supplement of the Postimees newspaper .

- February: The poem The Ballad of Reading Gaol is published under the pseudonym C.3.3. published as the last work by Oscar Wilde during his lifetime. In it he processes his time in Reading Jail.

- February 25 : The world premiere of the play Erdgeist by Frank Wedekind takes place in the Krystallpalast in Leipzig , with the author himself as Dr. Is beautiful on the stage.
- October 8 : On the Deutsches Theater Berlin is the legacy of Arthur Schnitzler premiered.
- December 14th : The Vienna Volksoper opens as a spoken theater on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the throne of Franz Joseph I under the name Kaiser-Jubiläums-Stadttheater . The emperor stayed away from the opening because of the murder of his wife.
