- March: The detective novel The Hound of the Baskervilles ( Hound of the Baskervilles by) Arthur Conan Doyle published as a book edition in London, a month before the final episode of the serialized novel in The beach Magazine comes out.
- May 4 : The comic figure Buster Brown, created by Richard Felton Outcault , appears in the New York Herald for the first time .
- June: Bertrand Russell writes to Gottlob Frege to inform him of the problem that has come to be known as Russell's Paradox .
- 18 / October 19 : Hugo von Hofmannsthal's prose work Letter of Lord Chandos is published in two parts in the Berliner Zeitung the day .
- November 13 : The story Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad appears for the first time in book form.
- By Emil bunch of "student Roman" appears Freund Hein. A life story .
- The utopian novel Old New Land of Theodor Herzl , who looks at a Jewish settlement in Palestine, will be published in Leipzig for the first time. In the year of publication, Old New Land was translated into Hebrew by Nachum Sokolow and given the poetic title Tel Aviv .
- The novel The Immoralist by André Gide appears in the literary magazine Mercure de France in Paris. The wealthy Michel confesses to three old friends three months after the death of his wife Marceline from the last three years of his marriage and talks about prostitution and his homosexuality, among other things.
- The Danish author Martin Andersen Nexø publishes his socially critical novel Dryss ( Abundance ).
- Brave Seeleute , the first German translation of Rudyard Kipling's Captains Courageous , is published.
