- The novel Mattia Pascal is published by Luigi Pirandello .
- The partly autobiographical adventure novel The Sea Wolf ( The Sea Wolf ), in New York laid, is Jack London's greatest success.
- The story Das Gold is published by Peter Rosegger .
- James Joyce began work on his Dubliners cycle of stories in Paris , which was not published until 1914 .
drama
- January 30th : The world premiere of the drama The Cherry Orchard by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov takes place on the author's 44th birthday at the Moscow Art Theater . It is his last play, six months later, on July 15th, the playwright dies.
- February 1st : The world premiere of Pandora's Box takes place in front of an invited audience in the Intimate Theater in Nuremberg. After Erdgeist, the play is the second part of the Lulu tragedy by Frank Wedekind . The premiere, which Wedekind only agreed to after a long period of hesitation and revising the piece, turned into a theatrical scandal . An intervention by the police prevents a second performance planned for the following day. On March 29, there will be a one-time, closed performance in the Munich Schauspielhaus, which has received largely negative press coverage. On July 23, the Munich public prosecutor brought charges against Wedekind and his publisher Bruno Cassirer for distributing indecent writings.
- February 13 : The play The lonely path of Arthur Schnitzler will be premiered in Berlin.
- December 27th : The play Peter Pan , or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up by the Scottish playwright JM Barrie has its world premiere in London with great success.
