- February 20 : The Italian writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti publishes his futuristic manifesto in the Paris newspaper Le Figaro , thereby founding futurism .

- February: Thomas Mann completes the novel Royal Highness after four years of work . The work, in which Mann processed the romance that preceded his wedding with Katia Mann in February 1905, was published first in the Neue Rundschau and finally in October by S. Fischer Verlag .
- Spring: The journal novel Jakob von Gunten by Robert Walser is published by Bruno Cassirer in Berlin. The reviews are very different.
- September 23 : The first part of the serial novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra ( The Phantom of the Opera ) by the French journalist and writer Gaston Leroux is published in the newspaper Le Gaulois . The last part appears on January 8, 1910.
- In the November issue of The Oxford and Cambridge Review published EM Foster the science fiction short story The Machine Stops ( The machine is stationary ).
- The psychological novel Pitt and Fox . The love paths of the Sintrup brothers by Friedrich Huch appears in Munich.
- The fantastic novel The Other Side by Alfred Kubin is published by G. Müller in Munich and Leipzig.
- The fictitious correspondence of a Bavarian member of the state parliament from Ludwig Thoma , which has been published in loose succession in recent years , is collected by Albert Langen and published in Munich.
- Spring: The fictional novel Jakob von Gunten by Robert Walser is published by Bruno Cassirer in Berlin.
- Lyman Frank Baum publishes the children's book The Road to Oz ( Dorothy on Magic Paths ), another novel from the Wizard of Oz series.

- 5th January : The world premiere of the play Komtesse Mizzi or The Family Day by Arthur Schnitzler takes place at the Volkstheater in Vienna.
- September 29th : The comedy Når den ny vin blomstrer ( When the young wine blooms ) by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson , the final piece by the Norwegian author, has its world premiere in Oslo.
- December 23 : The world premiere of the Impressionist discussion comedy The Concert by Hermann Bahr will be directed by Otto Brahm at the Lessing Theater in Berlin.
