Fritz Martini

Fritz Oskar Richard Martini (born September 5, 1909 in Magdeburg , † July 5, 1991 in Stuttgart ) was a German philologist (German and English studies).

Life

Martini studied at the universities of Zurich , Graz , Heidelberg , Grenoble and Berlin . In 1933 he was in Berlin with a thesis on Wilhelm Raabe doctorate . In 1933 he joined the NSDAP and the SA as a storm man and gave Nazi training lectures.

In 1938 he completed his habilitation at the University of Hamburg with the thesis The peasantry in German literature from the beginnings to the 16th century with Robert Petsch . From 1943 he was an associate professor for aesthetics and general literature at the Technical University of Stuttgart . Martini was a member of the executive committee of the German Academy for Language and Poetry . He has taught several times as a visiting professor in the USA, England, Scandinavia, Italy and other places. In 1950 Martini received a full professorship.

Martini wrote a much-read standard work on the history of German literature, the German history of literature from the beginnings to the present (1st edition 1949 - 19th edition 1991), which he revised again and again, as the assessment of the most recent epochs of German literary history changed rapidly. He also edited the works of Christoph Martin Wieland (1964–1968). He was editor of the magazine Der Deutschunterricht (1948–1979) and the yearbook of the German Schiller Society (1957–1987).

In 1974 he retired.

Afterlife

Fritz Martini is the subject of the sub-project Fritz Martini. A literary scholar during and after the Nazi era of the DFG project International Academic Relations in Germany from 1933 to 1945 .
