Live and act

After studying law Erich Horn man was with the work The transfer of ownership of non-attachable things in 1936 at the University of Erlangen for Dr. iur. PhD. In 1947 Hornsmann was one of around 500 founding members of the German Forest Protection Association (SDW), for which he was strongly committed. In keeping with Victor Dieterich's theory of forest functions , he made the public aware of the diverse services of forests. With his books ... otherwise downfall. The Earth's Response to Disregard of Its Laws (1951), The Forest. A foundation of our existence (1955), but above all the forest helps everyone. His welfare effects (1958) he created the first comprehensive presentation and assessment of the individual results from science and practice on the welfare effects of the forest, which had previously only been published scattered. As such, he named water protection , soil protection , wind protection , climate protection , avalanche protection , bank protection , noise protection , health protection , radiation protection and protection of cultural monuments in the forest and of the plants, fungi and animals living in the forest ecosystem. In his considerations, Hornsmann always included the comprehensive cultural significance of the forest. Thanks to their language, their clear structure and easily understandable preparation, the books were also well received by non-specialists.

Hornsmann warned early on - not least on the basis of examples from antiquity - of increasing desertification , the increasing risk of flooding from deforested mountainsides and hillsides and the dangers of neglected avalanche protection due to increasing skiing in the Alps . Since the protection of water is closely linked to the protection of forests, Hornsmann also submitted writings on this which warned the careful use of water as a resource. The comprehensive representation of water deserves special mention here . A Problem Every Time (1956). Hornsmann also disseminated his findings in numerous articles that were published in various specialist journals . The protection of honeybees was also of particular concern to him . Overall, Hornsmann can therefore be considered one of the earliest and most committed environmentalists in the Federal Republic of Germany.

From 1964 to 1990 he was managing director of the SDW regional association of Bavaria. During this time he played a key role in the creation of the Bavarian Forest Act (BayWaldG) of 1975, which was the first contemporary forest law in Germany to replace the forestry laws of the 19th century. Hornsmann also made a significant contribution to the fact that Hofoldinger , Ebersberger , Perlacher and Kreuzlinger Forst as well as Forstenrieder Park were preserved and designated as protected forests despite strong clearing pressure . He also ensured that the term “Bannwald” was anchored in the new forest law. In addition, Hornsmann initiated the recording and mapping of the various forest functions for all of Bavaria at the end of the 1960s. Hornsmann has thus made a significant contribution to the reorientation of forest policy and forest planning with regard to greater consideration of the interests of nature and environmental protection in forest management. After retiring as managing director in 1990, Erich Hornsmann was an honorary member of the German Forest Protection Association (SDW).

The work of Dr. Erich Hornsmann has been honored with a number of awards, including the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class . He died on November 14, 1999 in Feldafing in the Starnberg district. In 2001/2002, the SDW Regional Association of Bavaria donated part of its files to the Bavarian Main State Archives, including files from Hornsmann's estate, mainly from the period from 1948 to 1970.
