- June: The artist novel The Way to the Free , Arthur Schnitzler's first novel, on which the author has been working since 1902, appears in Berlin.
- Lucy Maud Montgomery's first novel Anne of Green Gables is published. Due to the great success of the children's book, the Canadian will soon be writing several sequels.
- The novel Der Gehülfe by Robert Walser is published by Bruno Cassirer in Berlin.
- The historical novel L'Île des Pingouins ( The Island of the Penguins ) by Anatole France appears in Paris. Allegedly a chronicle of the fictional country of Alka in eight books, the novel is a satire on the history of France in particular and the history of the Christian West in general.
- EM Forster publishes the novel A Room With a View .

- January 21 : The world premiere of the chamber play Die Gespenstersonata by August Strindberg based on the sonata of the same name by Ludwig van Beethoven takes place. The premiere flopped, the play only became a success four years after the poet's death.

- The first edition of the bimonthly literary magazine Hyperion by Carl Sternberg and Franz Blei is published by Hans von Weber . Walter Tiemann is responsible for the graphic design . Among other things, the first works are published in the journal Franz Kafkas .
