- End of the year: In the Rowohlt publishing house appears observation , an anthology of prose texts by Franz Kafka . In the same year Kafka wrote the short stories The Metamorphosis and The Judgment , the latter written on the night of September 22nd to 23rd, without publishing them.
- Arthur Schnitzler in S. Fischer Verlag published collection of short stories masks and wonders contains, among other stories The killer , the shepherd's flute and The Diary of Redegonde .
- The Neue Rundschau publishes Thomas Mann's novella Death in Venice for the first time .
- Waldemar Bonsels publishes Maya the Bee and Her Adventures . The book will be translated into over 40 languages over the next few years and will make its author world-famous.
- Gerhart Hauptmann publishes the novel Atlantis .
- Arthur Schnitzler begins work on the novella Escape into Darkness under the working title Wahn .

- Rainer Maria Rilke begins writing his Duino elegies at Duino Castle near Trieste , the first of which he will send to his host Marie von Taxis on January 21 . - December 7th : Peterchens Mondfahrt , a fairy tale game in six pictures by Gerdt von Bassewitz with music by Josef Achtélik and "set in scene" by Paul Prina is premiered in the Old Theater in Leipzig . The fairy tale is after his great success in 1915 published as a book.
- George Bernard Shaw publishes the play Pygmalion based on Ovid's Pygmalion material . The world premiere takes place on October 16, 1913 in German in Vienna.

- Gerhart Hauptmann received the Nobel Prize for Literature "primarily for his rich, versatile, outstanding effectiveness in the field of dramatic poetry" .
- The Kleist Prize is awarded for the first time on the 101st anniversary of Heinrich von Kleist's death . Hermann Burte for the work Wiltfeber and Reinhard Sorge for Der Bettler, a dramatic show are the first to win the prizes. At Richard Dehmel's suggestion, the decision on the award does not lie with the majority of the Kleist Foundation's board of trustees, but with a single “person of trust” every year.
