Det Norske Teatret ( German  "The Norwegian Theater" ) is a theater in the center of Oslo , which mainly performs plays in Nynorsk and Norwegian dialects . The theater was founded on November 22nd, 1912, and the first director was Hulda Garborg .

The first performance took place on October 6, 1913, in the presence of the Norwegian King Håkon VII . The comedy Jeppe på Berget (Eng. "Jeppe auf dem Berg") was played by Ludvig Holberg , which was translated by Arne Garborg . The following performances were marked by disturbances in front of the theater, where supporters of the Riksmål tried to stop the performances. Something similar happened in 1948 when the theater performed Peer Gynt in a New Norwegian version with music by Harald Sæverud .

After several moves, the theater has been located in Oslo's Kristian IVs gate since 1985 . It is known in Norway for its musical productions; the greatest successes were Les Misérables , Cats and Piaf .

Det Norske Teatret is the only larger theater in Norway that is not run by the state, but by associations. However, since the state grants around 100 million Norwegian kroner annually , the management is determined by the state.

The building at Kristian IVs gate was awarded the Norwegian architecture prize Betongtavlen in 1986 .

The current theater director is Vidar Sandem.
