Who are the killers? ( Russian Кто убийцы? , Acct ubizy? ) Is a story by Leo Tolstoy , whose writing began in early 1909th The fragment was published posthumously in 1912 in vol. 3 of LN Tolstoy's bequeathed artistic works by Ivan Pavlovich Ladyschnikow in Berlin .
The author, an old man, could perhaps be Tolstoy himself. He insults the Russian authorities in his narrow preface to the worst, feels that his previous silence is “complicit in the atrocities of those in power”, wants to give up the previous “foolish, meaningless scribbling” and now unpack it shortly before his death.

In the winter of 1905, the farmer Semjon Burylin had placed his employed son Pawel advantageously as a clerk in a Moscow perfume factory. The father had negotiated a decent salary with the factory owner Mikhail Borisovich Schindel. Pawel regularly sends a good part of it home. At home in the village - Pawel had to leave his bride Agrafena there - father and mother are proud of their capable boy. Among farmers, Pawel always knew how to act appropriately in every situation in life. In the big city he has to orient himself and find his place. There he meets his former work colleague Nikolai Anossow in Moscow. Pawel, who likes to read, is supplied with literature by Anossow and introduced to the aims of the workers' union. The factory owner Schindel doesn't mind if his subordinates organize themselves. Schindel would even tolerate strikes. However, the latter would have to take place peacefully. When Schindel discusses such progressive ideas in his middle-class circle, the figure of the up-and-coming young clerk Pawel Burylin goes through his head as promising.
The Social Revolutionaries' Committee is planning an attack. Because a printing press costs around 10,000 rubles. Pavel is thrilled when Anossow recruits him as the second man. The exploiter, Schindel, is said to be relieved by 7,000 rubles on pay day. The armed robbery on the till fails. Clapboard and a housekeeper from the neighboring building stand in the way of the duo. When Pawel wanted to shoot the escape route with revolver shots in the air - without prey - he was arrested by the police, "taken to the big prison and left there to himself."
