- June 4 : Arthur Schnitzler publishes the story The Murderer in the Neue Freie Presse .
- September 9th : Arthur Schnitzler's story Die Hirtenflöte appears in the literary magazine Die neue Rundschau in Berlin.
- October: The Diary of Redegonde of Arthur Schnitzler is in the Süddeutsche Monatshefte published in Munich.
- GK Chesterton publishes its first collection of short stories: The Innocence of Father Brown .
- With The New Machiavelli , HG Wells publishes his first novel of ideas and problems , in which the plot is subordinate to the sociological and ideological message.
- By Arnold Zweig , the narrative appears records of a family knocker .
- Stefan Zweig publishes the anthology First Experience - Four Stories from Kinderland in Insel-Verlag , which includes the novella Burning Secret .

- Jan. 13 : At the Berlin Lessing Theater is Gerhart Hauptmann's late naturalism associated tragicomedy The rats premiered.
- February 15 : The premiere of the comedy Die Hose by Carl Sternheim triggers a scandal. The caustic ridicule against the German philistine ultimately even led to the play being temporarily banned.
- April 19 : The by George Bernard Shaw published anonymously comedy Fanny's First Play has the Adelphi Theater in London its first performance .
- May 22nd : The world premiere of Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien ( The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian ), a "Mystery in Five Acts" by Gabriele D'Annunzio , at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris turns into a scandal. The Archbishop of Paris, Léon-Adolphe Amette , forbids all Catholics to attend the performances because of the representation of the saint by a scantily clad Jewish and Russian woman, Ida Rubinstein . As a result, all of D'Annunzio's pieces were placed on the index librorum prohibitorum . The audience reacts snubbed or bored because of the five-hour duration of the piece, which is only about an hour of music by Claude Debussy .
- October 14 : The tragicomedy The vast land of Arthur Schnitzler will be premiered at several stages in Germany. Following the performance at the Burgtheater in Vienna, Schnitzler was called in front of the curtain 24 times by the audience, according to his own entry in his diary, and was celebrated by critics and audiences in several places in the following weeks.
- December 1st : Hugo von Hofmannsthal's play Jedermann , based on the model of late medieval mystery games , is premiered in the Berlin Schumann Circus under the direction of Max Reinhardt . The stage design for the premiere is by Ernst Stern .
- December 23rd : The Miracle , the most important play by Karl Gustav Vollmoeller, has its world premiere in London.

- January 11th : The expressionist poem End of the World by Jakob van Hoddis is published in the Berlin magazine Der Demokratie .
- March 18 : Alfred Lichtenstein's poem The Twilight appears in the expressionist magazine Der Sturm . In October it will also be printed in the Simplicissimus .
- By Else Lasker-Schüler collection of poems appear My miracle .
