Weitbrecht came from the Schorndorfer branch of the Württemberg Weitbrecht family and was the son of pastor Karl Gottlieb Weitbrecht (1810-1886) and Julie, née Finck (1823-1893). After leaving school, he studied at the University of Tubingen theology and philosophy and his doctorate there to the Dr. phil. After a longer stay in Italy, which inspired him to rework the blood structure of Calabria and the text Battle for Rome , he first became pastor in Mähringen near Ulm and from 1893 in Wimpfen .

From an early age he dealt with local stories , folk and youth writings, song texts, novellas , poems and short stories. He often worked with his brother, the literary historian Carl Weitbrecht , and other regional poets of the time. He was particularly interested in editing and rewriting already known stories or writing treatises on these texts.

Richard Weitbrecht was married to Eugene Haug (1853-1886), with whom he had two children. After her death he married Marianne Murschel (* 1865), who gave birth to four more children.
