Raymond Abrashkin

Raymond Abrashkin ( Ray Ashley , born March 9, 1911 in New York City , † August 25, 1960 in Weston , Connecticut ) was an American writer, screenwriter and director.

The son of Ukrainian immigrants attended the City College of New York and initially worked as a teacher in New York schools. During the Second World War he served in the US Maritime Service . From 1945 he was editor at Reynal and Hitchcock , before settling in 1946 as a freelance writer independently made.

He has written science fiction books for children about the hero Danny Dunn (later filmed as Sun of Flubber ) and four libretti for children's operas. He became known with the film Little Fugitives ( The Little Runaway , 1953). Using the pseudonym Ray Ashley, he wrote the script with Morris Engel and Ruth Orkin and directed the film. The three authors jointly received the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1953 and were nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Story in 1954 .
