Ernst Stern
Ernst Stern (born April 1, 1876 in Bucharest , † August 28, 1954 in London ) was a Romanian-German stage designer , set designer , costume designer and graphic artist .
Life
He attended the commercial academy in Vienna and from 1894 the Munich art academy with Nikolaus Gysis and Franz von Stuck . In Munich he drew for the magazines Jugend and Simplicissimus . As Tobias Loch, the quick painter, he appeared with the eleven executioners and was a member of the Munich Secession and the Dramatic Society.
In 1905 he went to Berlin and worked, among other things, for the Lustige Blätter . Max Reinhardt engaged him shortly after taking over the Deutsches Theater in 1906. Until Reinhardt left in 1921, he designed around 90 scenarios as chief stage designer. Subordinate to him were among others Edvard Munch and Alfred Roller , with whom he worked several times. Stern was a member of the Berlin Secession and can be found in the directory of members of the German Association of Artists as early as 1906 .
After Reinhardt's departure, he furnished operas and operettas. Erik Charell made him head of equipment at the Großer Schauspielhaus in 1924 . During this time the revues An Alle (1924/25), Für Dich! (1925/26), Von Mund zu Mund (1926/27) and the operetta Im Weißen Rößl (first performance in 1930, further performances in 1931 London Coliseum , 1933 Paris Magador and 1936 Center Theater New York).
In addition, from 1918 onwards, Stern regularly created film sets. He worked with prominent directors such as Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau , Ernst Lubitsch (from 1921 until his departure to Hollywood in 1922), Richard Oswald , Max Mack , Carl Froelich and Wilhelm Dieterle . He designed the costumes for Charell's famous historical and music film Der Kongress dances with Lilian Harvey and Willy Fritsch . His graphic oeuvre also includes four portfolio works with over 40 lithographic sheets from 1918/19, including Die Ballette des Deutschen Theater (with texts by Oscar Bie ) and 12 sheets on Frank Wedekind's Pandora's box .
At the time of seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933 he was in Paris at the performance of the operetta The White Horse Inn . Stern initially stayed in Paris and was brought to Hollywood by Charell in 1934 for the film Caravane . In the same year he went to London, which became his second home. Here he concentrated almost exclusively on his work as a set designer in collaboration with British authors, directors and actors, particularly at the Savoy Theater , Aldwych Theater and Adelphi Theater . He was honored by the king by awarding him a pension.
