- January 8th : The last part of the serial novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra ( The Phantom of the Opera ) written by Gaston Leroux appears in the newspaper Le Gaulois .
- Karl May's last completed novel Winnetou IV appears. The author processes his trip to America in 1908 and at the same time puts an end to the adventures of Old Shatterhand in North America.
- Rainer Maria Rilke completes his only novel The Notes of Malte Laurids Brigge in Leipzig , which he began in Rome in 1904. The work consists of 72 notes, which often resemble prose poems and mostly follow one another unconnected, and is always called a “prose book” and never a “novel” by Rilke himself.
- Hermann Bahr publishes the novel O Mensch .
- The novel Gertrud by Hermann Hesse appears in its final version.
- The Fool in Christo Emanuel Quint , Gerhart Hauptmann's first novel, is published in Berlin.
- Thomas Mann starts working on his novel Confessions of the Con man Felix Krull .
- The short stories Songs in the Village and Grateful Soil as well as the story Three Days in the Country are published by Lev Tolstoy .
- Lyman Frank Baum publishes the children's book The Emerald City to Oz ( Dorothy in the Emerald City ), another novel from the Wizard of Oz series.
Poetry
- The poetry collections Palmström and Einkehr by Christian Morgenstern are published in Berlin by Bruno Cassirer's publishing house .
- The song collection Gitanjali ( song offerings ) appears alongside other works by Rabindranath Tagore in Calcutta . In 1913 she became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature .
- Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen wrote the ballad from the nettle bush .

- September 10 : The premiere of the Bauernschwank First Class by Ludwig Thoma takes place in Munich.
- November 24th : The play The Young Medardus by Arthur Schnitzler has its world premiere under the direction of Hugo Thimig at the Burgtheater in Vienna.
- December 17th : The world premiere of the naturalistic drama Faith and Home by Karl Schönherr takes place in Vienna.

- December: My Life and Striving by Karl May appears.

- March 3 : The expressionist magazine Der Sturm, a weekly for culture and art , published by Herwarth Walden , appears for the first time.

- The German doctor Magnus Hirschfeld coined the term transvestism .

- The German Paul Heyse received the Nobel Prize for Literature “as a tribute to the perfected and ideally conceptualized artistry that he exhibited during a long and significant activity as a poet, playwright, novelist and poet of world-famous short stories” .
