CC Bergius
CC Bergius , actually Egon-Maria Zimmer , (* July 2, 1910 in Buer / Westphalia , † March 23, 1996 in Vaduz ) was a German writer .
Life
Even as a schoolboy, Egon-Maria Zimmer was often at the small airfield in his Westphalian hometown. He attended secondary school until shortly before graduation and made his first flight at the age of 17. In 1930 he completed an apprenticeship as an export merchant in Hamburg and joined the NSDAP in the 1930s . From 1933 he was a flight instructor , member of the Condor Legion , with the start of the war a weather pilot and test pilot, then from 1941 a flight captain and pilot for the Ministry of Armaments. After the Second World War , he began a career as a writer and initially founded his own publishing house. His books have been translated into nineteen languages and, thanks to Bertelsmann Verlag, which mainly marketed the novels through the book club, had a total circulation of eleven million copies.
In honor of Friedrich Bergius , who received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1931 , he took the author's name CC Bergius . The chemist Bergius had developed a process for liquefying coal so that, despite the scarcity of raw materials in Germany, aviation fuel could be produced using the Bergius-Pier process , thus making flying possible.
Bergius was a member of the PEN Club and a founding member of the PEN Club Liechtenstein . His abandoned library is located in the Liechtenstein National Library .
He became known to a wide audience in the 1960s through the series “ Straße der Piloten” on ZDF , the first major documentary about aerospace in German television history.
