Eric Lawson Malpass (born November 14, 1910 in Derby , † October 16, 1996 ) was an English writer .

Life

Eric Malpass worked as a bank clerk in Central England for a long time before joining the BBC in 1947. He worked for several major newspapers , including the Observer , whose short story competition he won in 1954. In 1960, his novel Beefy is to blame for everything (English original title: Beefy Jones ) was awarded the Palme d'Or for the best humorous book of the year in Italy . Eric Malpass lived as a freelance writer in Long Eaton , East Midlands near Nottingham.

Malpass was a great Shakespeare lover, which is evident in almost all of his novels. In addition to the popular Gaylord novels, In the morning at seven, the world is still in order (Original title: Morning's at seven ) and When sweetly the moonlight sleeps on the hills (Original title: At the Height of the Moon ), he wrote five more other novels in this series, which did not achieve the same level of fame as the first two books, which is probably related to their film adaptation. Another story , which was also processed as film material in Germany, was When mother went on strike (English original title: Oh My Darling Daughter ). The three-part Shakespeare biography Do I love a bright star in the sky (English original title: Sweet Will ), Unhappy we are not alone (English original title: The Cleopatra Boy ) and I hear the chime of the hours (English original title: A House of Women ) testifies to Malpass' passion for the great playwright. Almost all of his books are humorous family stories in which "Malpass defines happiness not as a condition or convention", "but as a moment of confidence amidst all the uncertainties, doubts and failures that normal life usually consists of" ( Sybil Countess Schönfeldt ) . Except for seven in the morning the world is still in order , most of his work, which has been translated into German in bookshops, is out of print.
