When mother went on strike is a German film adaptation by Eberhard Schröder from 1974. It was based on the novel Oh my darling daughter by Eric Malpass .

action

When Clementine Kemper, mother of three children, is once again prevented from playing the piano and singing by her husband Harry, a writer, and then one of the many arguments about domestic rights and duties unravels, Clementine packs her things and leaves. Harry now not only has to write his new book, he also has to take care of Viola, who has just passed secondary school, the early adolescent Persephone and the youngest Nicki. Viola takes care of the household more badly and when the family meets Clementine's friend Gloria in town, who is in dire financial straits, they hire her as a housekeeper.

Gloria has nothing else to do but turn the heads of the men of the village. Viola in particular suffers from this, as Gloria's friends are also her secret crush, the bank clerk Gabriel. He is also adored by Miss Bandel, Viola's former teacher. Persephone, however, suspects a relationship between her father and Gloria and sends threatening letters to the father, with the advice to keep hands off Gloria, and threatening letters to Viola and Miss Bandel to leave Gabriel alone. Miss Bandel then makes a suicide attempt.

Gabriel gives Gloria an engagement ring to put an end to the gossip in the village. However, Gloria refuses to get engaged because he could never give her the luxury she wants in life. Gabriel then becomes engaged to Viola, who doesn't know anything about the first attempt at engagement. Before Harry Gloria can expire, Clementine is back at the door. She has returned from a two-month trip around the world to the Orient and within a few hours she knows all the village gossip and knows all the secrets of her children, which her father did not know. Viola learns of Gabriel's machinations and gives him back his engagement ring. Instead, she falls in love with show jumper Jochen, who occasionally comforted her during her mother's absence. When Jochen had an accident at a tournament, Viola visits him in the hospital and they both confess their love. Harry finally has time to write again. He begins to write a novel titled When Mother Struck - dedicated to his wife Clementine.

production

The film was shot in 1973 in the Schleswig-Holstein open-air museum near Kiel . It had its premiere on February 7, 1974.

It was the last full-length feature film in which Johanna Matz took part, and at the same time the last directorial work of the director Eberhard Schröder, who until then had almost exclusively focused on sex films. This took his own life a few weeks after the premiere, as the commercial failure of Als Mutter struck undermined all his hopes of escaping the orbit of the sex film industry.

criticism

The lexicon of international films called Als Mutter on strike in 1990 "moderately exhilarating entertainment based on the hit novel by Malpass". The new edition of the lexicon said about the film: "Only moderately cheerful entertainment that gambled away all the possibilities of the topic and instead delivered mendacious images of families and women."

Cinema found: “Even the last remnant of the charm of the book by Eric Malpass [...] evaporates in this pseudo-emancipatory, dreary production. Conclusion: lying, morally acidic family policy. "
