Dadaism
Hugo Ball , Emmy Hennings , Tristan Tzara , Richard Huelsenbeck , Marcel Janco and Hans Arp found the artistic and literary movement of Dadaism in Zurich . Dada is characterized by the rejection of “conventional” art or art forms and bourgeois ideals. The Dada gave considerable impulses to the art of the modern up to today's contemporary art .

- December 29 : James Joyce published the autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man ( A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man ). In the Bildungsroman he applies the narrative technique of the stream of consciousness for the first time to the thoughts of his alter ego Stephen Dedalus .
- The historical novel The Three Jumps of Wang-lun by Alfred Döblin is published in Berlin .
- The novella Der Jaukler von Bologna by Franz Karl Ginzkey is published in Leipzig .
- The novel Mäeküla piimamees by Eduard Vilde appears.
- With The Clan of Munes appear at Charles Scribner's Sons , the only novel by the painter and illustrator Frederick Judd Waugh . Despite positive reviews, the 56-page self-illustrated book remains a slow seller and Waugh buys the remaining copies back from the publisher.
Poetry
- Peter Rosegger and Ottokar Kernstock write a volume of poetry with nationalistic war poetry.

- The comedy The Faithful Maid by Bruno Frank will premiere and will appear in print.

- The Hungarian philosopher Georg Lukács publishes the literary theoretical study The theory of the novel . It is considered to be one of the most important contributions to the theory of the novel .
Awards ceremonies
- The Swedish poet Verner von Heidenstam received the Nobel Prize for Literature for his series of novels, Karolinerna , “as recognition of his importance as a spokesman for a new era in our beautiful literature” .
