Karl Friedrich Eberhard von Schlözer , pseudonym Eber Hart (born April 22, 1854 in Stettin , † October 6, 1916 in Dresden ) was a German diplomat and writer.

Life

Karl von Schlözer was a son of the imperial Russian consul in Stettin Nestor von Schlözer from his second marriage to the painter Luise Freiin von Meyern-Hohenberg (1823-1907). His brother Leopold (1859-1946) became a major and a writer. In 1873, both sons were dismissed from their Russian subjects at the request of the father.

From 1859 he grew up on Gut Rothensande , an estate acquired by his father . Wilhelm Wisser was initially his tutor. He then attended the Eutin grammar school, today's Johann-Heinrich-Voss-Schule , up to the Michaelis Abitur in 1873. After completing his service as a one-year volunteer in 1873/74, he studied law at the universities of Strasbourg, Leipzig and Vienna from the winter semester of 1873/74 and Göttingen. On January 25, 1879, he passed the trainee exam. He entered the Prussian judicial service and in 1882 was a trainee lawyer at the justice administration in Stendal . As a reserve officer , most recently Rittmeister of the reserve, he was part of the Uhlan regiment "Graf Haeseler" (2nd Brandenburg) No. 11 .

On September 17, 1885, he was accepted into the diplomatic service of the German Empire . His first foreign assignment was from February to August 1886 in St. Petersburg , where his grandfather Karl von Schlözer and his father had already worked in Russian services and his uncle Kurd von Schlözer in the Prussian legation.

In 1889 he passed the diplomatic exam. From 1887 to 1889 he was stationed in Rio de Janeiro , from 1889 to 1891 in Belgrade, from 1891 to 1893 in Athens and from 1893 to 1895 in Bucharest. On November 9, 1894, he was awarded the character as Counselor . From 1895 to 1897 he was Legation Secretary in The Hague and from 1897 to 1899 First Secretary in Constantinople . From December 1899 to 1902 he was First Secretary, from 1900 onwards with the rank of Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, at the Embassy in Paris .

On December 30, 1902, he became Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary in The Hague, where he remained until December 1907. This was followed by years as the Prussian envoy at the Bavarian court in Munich from the beginning of 1908 to 1911.

With effect from September 24, 1911, he was retired.

He was married to Maria Pauline Henriette, born in September 1891. von Rigal (1868–), a daughter of the entrepreneur Ludwig Maximilian von Rigal-Grunland .

Part of Karl von Schlözer's estate is located together with the family estate as the Schlözer Foundation in the Göttingen State and University Library . Another part of the estate is kept in the Schleswig-Holstein State Library.
